An Ode to My Dad

I wrote my Dad a poem this year for Father's Day...thought I'd better include it in my journal.  It brought a tear to both his and my eye recalling all of our fond memories of the past.  I love you, Dad!

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!
You’re such an amazing Dad.
For getting you,
I am so glad!

A twist of fate,
A lucky star,
My life is better with YOU,
by far.

So many memories
of you I love,
You were sent to me,
by someone up above.

I loved our drives up dirt roads
and shoveling snow,
Cutting a tree,
frost bitten toes.

Cleaning up messes,
before you could see,
Games in the car,
especially spelling bee.

Harvesting the garden
and picking berries,
You frying zucchini,
and making chili.

Making you a sandwich
for an afternoon snack,
Watching you change the sprinklers,
in front & back.

I loved those hot summer days,
when we’d all shell the peas.
Scrape the deck or fence,
Or sit in the shade snapping beans.

Your old, blue robe,
Your mint green suit,
You shucking the corn,
or picking fruit.

Your manly skills,
of trapping a mouse,
and dangling it in my face,
I woke up the whole house.

Playing Lords of Conquest,
Galaxy & Mule,
Getting a speech,
when I broke a rule.

Cleaning your bathroom,
making you smile.
Jokes at school,
which sometimes took awhile.

Family home evenings
that didn’t end quite right,
Loving you for trying,
with all your might!

Stories at bedtime…
The Giant Jam Sandwich,
The Five Little Peppers,
You were giving us an advantage.

You read us Richard Scary
and something about an elephant and a sneeze,
You loved Sir Toby Jingles,
You'd beg us, please? please? to read.

Stocking the soda machines
at school,
while whistling a tune…
You were so cool.

Counting the money
with you after games,
Hearing you always
mix up our names.

Trips to Costco
and to buy me new shoes,
Grandma’s funeral
and KFC with just you.

Your record collection,
recording our voices,
You always helping me,
make the right choices.

The night we got “lost”
up in Rose Valley,
Trips to see you,
in southern Cali.

The night you kicked me
and Nat out of the car
For laughing and giggling
a bit too hard.

Looking for a monkey wrench,
and failing three times.
If you would’ve asked a boy,
you’d have had it on time.

The day I kicked in the shed,
and you didn’t get mad,
I knew you had grown,
and I was so glad.

You paying bills,
and playing business cards,
Hearing you whistle,
while you worked in the yard.

Star Trek on Saturdays,
and Seahawk Sundays,
Long hours at church,
I’m sure those weren’t fun days.

Oatmeal for breakfast,
stretches each morning,
Waking us up,
when we couldn’t stop snoring.

Burning the garbage
in our wood stove,
Telling us stories
while you drove.

Trips to Seattle,
BC, and Swan Lake,
So many fun memories
with you I did make.

I love you so much, Dad,
and I hope that you know,
How dear to me you are,
and how much you’ve helped me grow.

You’ve taught me to work,
to forgive, to never quit,
You’ve taught me about loyalty,
and how to joke a bit.

You’ve taught me to achieve,
and to stick to your game,
You’ve been there for me always,
and I hope to be the same.

Father's Day!

For Father's Day this year we, of course, woke Daddy up with a great breakfast!  And then the kids were excited to give them their gifts.  Halle had made a footprint at nursery, and Jack had made a card and footprint with a poem at preschool to give to Dad.  They also helped me on a special project this year.  They've had a book for a couple of years called "A Day with Daddy" that they've enjoyed reading with Dusty.  Unfortunately, one or both of the kids had ripped the book and torn out pages over the last year and it was in quite the disrepair.  So, we took Daddy to the park to capture all of the images we'd need for the story, and made our own book to replace the favorite story.  Dusty and the kids both loved it!  Later Jack & Dusty played some Skate2 on the PS3 (which they've been doing quite a lot of lately), and then we went up to spend the afternoon with Grandpa Sherm.  I think the boys had a fun day!  We sure love all of our good Dads!

Halle's 3rd Birthday

For Halle's birthday, we took her out to Arctic Circle for one of her favorite meals - a corndog.  Next we took her bowling for her first time where she had a blast!  She even scored a strike and earned a BIG hug from Jack.  He had a ball too.  Later in the evening we had a pizza party with the family and Jack made sure to help Halle every step of the way when opening presents - he even shared in some of the excitement.

Halle wanted a Tinker Bell cake this year and I was a bit nervous about playing with fondant, but it turned out really cute and she loved it!  Last, but not least, you'll see our princess pictured with all of her loot for the day.  She has loved playing with all of it and sends a big thanks to everyone for the thoughtful gifs and for celebrating her special day with her.

Halle has been a joy to have in our family over the last three years.  She started out being such a dainty little baby and was oh, so snuggly.  She's still somewhat small for her age, but tells everyone now that she's three and a big girl.  She's got quite the sense of humor and loves to tease and tell jokes and we often hear her cute belly laugh when she thinks something is funny (I think she gets her sense of humor from her Dad).  She loves her brother, Mom & Dad, all of her Grandmas & Grandpas, her dollies, her books, singing, pretending to be a kitty, helping Mom in the kitchen, and coloring & painting.  She has a zest for life that we so enjoy having around and hope she continues to be the sweet and thoughtful little lady that she is.  We love you, Halle Joy!

Build-A-Bear with Grami Sue

Grami Sue likes to take the grandkids to Build-A-Bear for their 3rd or 4th birthday and this year was finally Halle's turn to go!  It was her first time and she was very excited.  We took the frontrunner train down so Halle could get the whole-day experience just like Jack did last year.  Here she is with Grami Sue...(in the 2nd picture, she's saying, "It's MY special day.  Not Jack's!  Mine"...which she repeated several times throughout the day.)

Halle was a little shy when getting her animal stuffed, but knew she wanted a kitty, and picked the Cinderella costume for her right away.  She sure loves Sugar and sleeps with her most every night.  (We can tell she's asleep at night when the meowing stops coming from Sugar's arm - she likes to push the meow button A LOT.)  We finished off the fun day with a peanut buster parfait from DQ and, of course, a hug & a kiss to tell Grami thank you.  Halle had a very special day that I'm sure she won't forget!  Thanks, Grami Sue!
